All About Teeth

Each year in 1st grade we do a unit All About Teeth.  Besides talking about how to take care of our teeth we also read lots of fun children's literature.  Here's a brand new book with a dental theme that you are sure to love.  In the story Pinkalicious looses her {sweet} tooth . . . and suddenly candy doesn't taste sweet anymore.  She uses her pink pen and write a note to the Tooth Fairy, but instead is visited by several other holiday friends.

We've also got a writing prompt you can download here and do with your kids after you read the story.

Another fun story to read during your dental theme is Never Take A Shark to the Dentist.  There is a creative writing activity available in our TpT store that your kids are sure to love.  It's book they get to create about things they should never do!!!

Sweetheart ABC Order

Here's an activity you could use at a center that we promise your kiddos will LOVE!!!

It's called Sweetheart ABC Order.

Begin by making two sets of {sweetheart} cards.  These could be simple hearts you make out of construction paper or scrapbook paper (like we did this year) or fancy cards you make on the computer (like we've done in the past).  You will need one set for the boys and one set for the girls.

Write each one of your little 1st grade sweetheart's first name on a card.  You could even attach their picture if you like.  We love to use the sticky pictures we get as teachers when school pictures are taken.  Hopefully you are lucky enough to get a set of these, too!!!
For this activity students will put each set of {sweetheart} name cards in ABC Order.  You will be amazed at how much fun they think this is . . . plus they are working on an important 1st grade skill.

Click on the heart to download a copy of the record sheet we are using this year.  Every year we have to change it up a little bit because we never seem to have the same number of boys and girls.

Valentine's Day Graphic Organizer

After TWO snow days last week followed by TWO full days of parent teacher conferences it was quite a week in 1st grade!!!  We hated to have to skip over all of the fun Groundhog Day activities and Healthy Heart stuff we had planned.  Luckily we can fit a little bit of it in this coming week and we have lots of other fun Valentine's Day stuff to do too.

And now . . . here's your Friday {or Saturday} Freebie.

If you have a favorite listening center you want to use in the next few weeks and need an activity for your students to do to go along with it, wait no more . . . here is a graphic organizer you can download and print.   You could even use it with one of your favorite Valentine's Day books you read aloud.

 {We like to enlarge this to an 11x17 document so our students have a little more room to write.}

Coming Soon . . . Some Valentine's Day writing ideas your 1st graders will LOVE!!!

STOP the Clock

Looking for a fun game your students can play to practice telling time to the hour and half hour?  Last year we found this game online and made a record sheet to go along with it.  We practiced playing it together as a whole group lots of times on our Promethean board before everyone got the chance to play it by themself on the mini laptops at centers.

Students have to drag the correct digital clocks to the correct analog clocks and then press {STOP THE CLOCK}.  Each time they can record their score hopefully they will get faster and faster.

Writing and Word Wall Posters

Welcome to Made for 1st Grade {the blog}.

We are so excited to be launching our blog for teachers just like you.  We plan to post loads of  ideas and resources that you can use in your {1st grade} classroom.  The best part is . . . there will be lots of freebies that you can download.

So, let's get started.  Here are some adorable jungle themed posters that you can print, laminate & hang in your classroom to remind students what kind of punctuation mark goes at the end of the sentences they write.  There are even posters that explain what a noun, verb and adjective are.

Be sure and check out our TpT site for lots of great thematic activities that you can use at your learning centers.  For those of you that like to plan ahead (like we do) we just posted lots of Shamrock/St. Patrick's Day activities earlier this week.

Check back later this week for some Leprechaun writing activities and a Friday Freebie.
