Last week as we were learning about the characteristics of amphibians we checked out several books from our school library about different kinds of frogs. After looking at the books we got the idea to create a little research activity. We divided our kiddos into groups of four and gave them each one of the frog books. Within each group the students had to work together to fill out a graphic organizer. Then they had to make a poster about their frog. It had to include a picture of the their frog in it’s habitat and have facts they had learned printed on it. We made sure that each member of the group had a part in every step of the project. After each group completed this activity they got to get up in front of the class and share what they had learned. The kids absolutely LOVED it!!!
They loved it so much that we decided to extend the project and let our students research an animal from each of the other animal groups. {I’m sure the librarians are just loving us . . . they are trying to get all of the books checked in and shelved and here we are checking out arm loads of books about reptiles, mammals, fish and birds.} These activities have been a BIG success. Not only have our kids learned how to locate information in a book using the index, but they have learned some fascinating facts about a variety of animals.

So if you are like us you are probably counting down the days/hours/minutes . . . and maybe even second until summer break. Don’t get us wrong, we LOVE our jobs, but we also LOVE our summer break. This time of year it seems like it is such a challenge to keep our little kiddos engaged all day long.
We decided we wanted to do something fun to countdown our last few days of school. Since we have five duty days of teaching left we thought we could do five giveaways to thank all of you for following us this year and checking in our little blog.

Primary Concepts has so graciously offered to team up with us again for another great giveaway. This time we will be giving away a copy of a great word building book called Word Chains. It’s a resource that we use during guided reading on a regular basis. We absolutely LOVE it and we are sure you will too.
Here’s how it works . . . students begin with a word and then change one letter at a time to build new words until they reach the final word in the chain. It can be done by dictating the words, which we do with our emerging readers, or by letting students try to solve the word chain independently. This is something that will really challenge your higher level learners.

As we wrap up our school year we wanted to share one last set of activities with you. We always spend the last days of school doing animal themed activities.
