Spelling City

The kind folks over at offered us a complimentary premium membership several months ago and we have had so much fun discovering with our class all of the great features that are available on their site.

For those of you who are not familiar with Vocabulary/Spelling City, it is an educational website with 25 different learning activities.  The best part is there are several activities that are available for FREE.  If you head over to their website and sign up for a free membership, you get to create your own homepage, where you can enter and save customized word lists that your students can access from school or at home. These word lists may be used in a variety of games and activities.  We have found that many of the activities work great on our interactive whiteboard.

Our kids absolutely LOVE playing Word-O-Rama with our weekly sight words and we have encouraged parents of our higher achieving students to log on and let their child practice typing their spelling words using the Spelling Test Me application.

This is a preview of the spelling games that are available and as you can see most of them are FREE.  Our kids absolutely LOVE to play Hang Mouse on our Promethean Board.  It’s a fun way to introduce new spelling words and then review them again at the end of the week.  We also have just started playing Letter Fall on the laptops and have had a lot of fun with it.

What are you waiting for . . . head on over and check it all out for yourself.  It might be a great resource to start your school year off with next year!!!

  1. Spelling City is fantastic! I have one student who can spell just about anything, so I let her play this when we're working on spelling that's way to easy for her. She loves Hangmouse!
