If your looking for some thematic activities to use throughout the year don’t miss out on our monthly thematic sets of math and language arts {cut and paste} worksheets.  They were designed for independent practice and they are all aligned with the Common Core Standards.  We always have one laid out each morning for our kiddos to work on as soon as they arrive at school.

Don’t miss out on our thematic word of the day packets either.  These are another fun way to have students begin their day.  We always have the word of the day poster displayed in our room on the Word of the Day board as students arrive each morning.  These thematic packs introduce vocabulary and have students practice writing a meaningful telling and asking sentence.

Let’s Talk Turkey!

We’ve been talking turkeys all week in our first grade classrooms.

Throughout the week we have read lots of interesting books and articles to learn about turkeys and we made a few fun art projects and books of our own. Here’s a peek at a few of the facts we learned . . .

There’s nothing we love more than finding cute projects online from other teachers.  Thanks to a freebie on TpT from Bright Concepts for Teachers we made a cute little turkey art project to wrap up our week of turkey themed fun.  Students all made the turkey body and then had to add feathers that each had a fact they had learned.  It was amazing how many feathers they wanted to add to their projects.  They they used their turkeys projects to write about all the things they learned.  We worked really hard on writing an introduction and a conclusion.

Here’s a peek at our final projects . . .

If you haven’t grabbed this freebie make sure you head over and get it . . . you’ve still got a few days to talk turkeys with your own kiddos.

Gobbling Up Main Idea and Details FREEBIE

It’s also not to late to grab a set of our new Terrific Turkey worksheets.  We finally got them finished up and posted in our TpT store.  We are looking forward to using them the next few weeks to review many of the math and language arts skills we’ve been covering.  They are the perfect supplement to use for independent practice.

Throughout the week our kids also worked on all of our It’s Turkey Time centers.  Their favorite activity was using the sentence wheel to write super turkey sentences about their fine feathered friends.

Sweet Giveaway Winners! Welcome OCTO-BEAR! Many Thanks! & A Night Out!

These past few months have been a whirlwind for both of us. Diane’s daughter got married August 3 and her father-in-law passed away the same day. So instead of planning for Open House she was driving 10 hours for a funeral and then coming back for the inservice and the first day of school. After 2 weeks of school Kelly’s husband died suddenly of a heart attack. It has been a very rough start to our school year. We are lucky to have wonderful little kiddos this year to help us through the day. Their smiles and hugs are precious!! We also work with some wonderful people!

SO many of you sent well wishes through our Gmail account and on the blog. We feel very blessed and want you to know that we appreciated all your kind messages!!!  MANY THANKS!!!

We also want to acknowledge everyone that posted on our “Sweet Give Away” blog post and announce the winners! Better late- than never!

When October comes to an end and our goblins are almost worn out from their excitement of Halloween we will finish up the month with one of our favorite stories and activities!

Harriet's Halloween Candy

Each of our themes is also integrated into our Word of the Day. Here is our Fall Word of the Day activity pack:

Fall Word of the Day

Here is what we did to get the school year off to a better start this weekend- Diane’s husband went to Iowa to help take care of his mom and Kelly treated Diane to a night out!

Blake Shelton is such an entertainer!! To think we just watched him on The Voice earlier in the week and then we got to see him live! He surprised the crowd with a visit from last years winner on The Voice, Danielle Bradbery-she is adorable!! Then Miranda Lambert came on stage later in the night and sang! It was an EPIC night! We didn’t get TEN TIMES CRAZIER, but we had a great time!!

We hope you are all off to a WONDERFUL start to your school year!!

In Memory Of…

One week ago Kelly’s husband Jeff died of a sudden heart attack. Please pray for peace and strength to get through this very emotional time. She has been blessed to be surrounded by her wonderful family and friends. She has been amazed at the outpouring of support. She even heard from many of the friends we have met through our blogging the past few years. She received these beautiful flowers! What a blessing you all have been! Thank you for your continued prayers for Kelly and her son Grant.

A Sweet Giveaway

Our school year is off to a very sweet start.  We are both absolutely loving our new little groups of firsties.  We’ve successfully made it through the first nine days of the school year and the level of exhaustion we were both experiencing is beginning to improve a little each day.

One of our favorite spots to hang out at school is in our cute little pod.  We share this space with two other fabulous first grade teachers.  All of our rooms have a door that opens to a little storage/meeting area.  It’s nothing fancy . . . at all!!!  It’s a great place for our paras to work with our kiddos, a fabulous place to shove all the things we don’t know what to do with and an even better place to meet up during breaks to chat and munch on some  yummy snacks.

This year we have added a very important little feature to our pod . . . it’s the fancy Party Pail.  Someone brought it in filled up with snack mix during our inservice days and after a week the pail was empty.  So we’ve decided to take turns refilling the Party Pail throughout the year with new snack mix recipies.

We would love to have some recipe ideas for new snack mixes so we thought we would have a sweet giveaway.

sweet giveaway

Simply post a comment with your email address and a link to one of your favorite teacher tested, tasted and approved snack mix recipes and you will have the chance to win ANY five items in our TpT store to help your school year get off to a sweet start.

We will choose (3) winners and post their recipes online for all of you.

Good luck everyone . . . this giveaway ends Monday night at 8:00 pm (CST).

We have kicked off the new school year with our Color Day Fun unit.  It is always one of our favorite units of the year.  It incorporates lots of great literature, creative writing and math activities while reviewing basic Kindergarten/1st grade skills and standards.

We know a lot of you are Houghton Mifflin users so we wanted to share a resource that we created several years ago to go with the “Back to School” section of the series.  It’s a set of sight word worksheets that review the kindergarten sight words.  They go right along with all of the little paper readers that come at the front of the workbook.  We always practice reading the little paper book that goes with each lesson several times together and then we create a class book by having each student fill in the blank to complete the sentence and draw a picture to illustrate their words.  Then we assemble the books and place them in our classroom library.  Even at the end of the year the kids still love going back and reading them!!!sentences

click {here} to download a copy

Even if you aren’t a Houghton Mifflin user this is still might be a resource you can use to start your school year.  All of the sentences are made up of very basic sight words that every 1st grader {should} be able to read!!!
