Super Sentence Wheels {Through the Year}

We are SO excited to share one of our very favorite resources for teaching students to write complete sentences.  Check out our Super Sentence Wheels Through the Year that includes a total of 13 wheels and student booklets.

Step 1:  Copy the sentence wheels on cardstock for each student.  Have students cut out the three circles and assemble them using a brad (metal fastener) so they can spin the wheels to create super sentences.

Step 2:  Brainstorm a list of adjectives (describing words) as a whole group that could describe the main character of your sentence wheel.  Encourage students to pick a different describing word for each sentence they create.

Step 3:  Align the WHO wheel with a verb/phrase from the DID WHAT wheel.

Step 4:  Align the WHERE wheel to create a super sentence.

Step 5:  Students will write their super sentence in the student book using correct capitalization and punctuation.  There is also space provided for them to illustrate their sentence.

Math Racers

Start your engines and get your students excited about numbers!

We are SO excited to introduce our newest product . . . Math Racers

Math Racers are a series of weekly number fluency skill builders that we will be sending home with our kiddos each night.  Students will compete against their time from the previous night as they race to improve their score during the week.

Last year our district began administering the TEN {Test of Early Numeracy} which is part of the AIMSweb program.  We used these quick assessment tools to identify students who were at risk.  Teaching children basic numeracy skills is the core of what we should be doing as first grade teachers so we wanted to expand on these measures and create activities that focused on building number fluency from 1-120.

Math Racers focus on the following skills:image

This unit includes 36 weeks of practice.image

Here is a {sneak} peek at the three different skills that are reviewed throughout the year as students slowly develop number fluency from 1-120.clip_image007

We look forward to using these this year with our kiddos.  For several years we have used a similar resource that we created to master sight words and they have been a BIG success.  Any time that students get to race against themselves or their classmates they get excited about learning!

Vegas Vacation

Last week we were lucky enough to be part of a fabulous group of teachers and bloggers at the SDE I Teach 1st conference in Las Vegas.  Here are just a few of the sweet ladies we got to meet and hang out with.

Diane celebrated her 50th birthday on Monday (the day we arrived).  With the help of Rachelle Smith I had a surprise birthday dinner planned for her . . . unfortunately the surprise was that we would arrive in Las Vegas nearly 6 hours late due to flight delays and have to postpone the party until the following night.

After two busy days of traveling and presenting at the conference we managed to find time to take in all the sights on the strip.  Around 9:30pm on our last night we threw on our gym shorts, tank tops and running shoes and hit the pavement.  Diane had never been to Vegas so we made sure we saw it all.  It was nearly 2:00 am when we finally arrived back at our hotel {The Pallazo}.

Here are just a few of our “Selfies on the Strip” . . .

Las Vegas wasn’t all fun and games . . . we worked, too!  Talk about nervous . . . yikes!!!!!  We were both wondering what we had gotten ourselves into the night before our presentations.  Luckily we had amazing facilities, a very helpful AV guy named Charles (who we nicknamed Charles In Charge) who help us set things up and a fabulous group of teachers who attended all three sessions.

And now . . . we have lots of new products and freebies just for you from our presentations.

We’ve created three brand new sets {Animal Print, Chevron Print and Polka Dot Print} of center materials to use to levelize your kiddos into 4 guided reading groups and set up 8 weekly math and literacy centers in your classroom.  An updated step-by-step guide will be available on our blog in the next few days.

We hope you are all enjoying your summer break . . . after getting home we finally feel like we’ve got a little break.  No more late nights spent pouring over PowerPoint presentations and handouts.  We are both geared up and excited to start updating all of our thematic center units and creating some new sets of materials to use with emerging writers.  Being around so many creative educators has us both pumped and ready for a great school year.  We’ve got lots of fun ideas coming!
